On Saturday, April 25, the Washington Hilton—home to the historic White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD)—became the scene of an attempted assassination. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance were rushed to safety and remain unharmed.
The incident broke out during the 8.30pm, while over 2,000 guests, including the elite of American politics and the titans of global journalism, were gathered in the ballroom. According to reports, the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, opened fire near a security checkpoint inside the hotel, where he was staying as a guest. Security footage shows Allen charging past officers like an “NFL running back” before being intercepted.
In the ensuing shootout, between five and eight rounds were fired. A Secret Service agent was wounded at close range but was saved by his ballistic vest and has already been discharged from the hospital. The swift intervention of law enforcement neutralized the suspect, who was found in possession of an arsenal including a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed that Allen was intentionally targeting “high-ranking administration officials, including the President.” Trump described the attacker as a “lone sicko” driven by “hate in his heart” and a “strongly anti-Christian” bias. The charges against Allen include: use of a firearm during a crime of violence and assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. Authorities have not ruled out attempted murder charges, pending formal indictment scheduled for Monday in federal court.
Speaking from the White House about an hour after the evacuation, the President appeared steadfast and resolute, though he admitted the First Lady was “quite traumatized.” “It’s always shocking when things like this happen,” Trump stated. “When you make an impact, they target you; when you don’t, they leave you alone.
