From yesterday morning, May 6th, to May 9th, 2025, the International Conference on Cultural Heritage in Africa: a dialogue on the concept of authenticity, organized by UNESCO, the Government of Kenya, and the African World Heritage Fund, is being held in Nairobi, Kenya.
The meeting brings together heritage experts, representatives of local communities, academics, NGOs, and government officials from across the African continent and other countries, with the aim of discussing and redefining the meaning of “authenticity” and “integrity” in the African context.
Africa possesses an exceptional cultural and natural heritage, but it is still underrepresented on the World Heritage List. The conference aims to bridge this gap by offering a space for theoretical and practical discussion on the conservation, enhancement, and transmission of African heritage.
The work includes keynote lectures, round tables, discussions on African traditions and the role of local communities, a commemorative lecture in honor of Prof. Munjeri, and a broad focus on youth and heritage.
The event also aims to contribute to the drafting of a final document that can guide future policies and actions for the protection and promotion of African cultural heritage, in particular through an authentic and contextualized approach that values African visions and fully involves local communities.
