Emotions acts as an illusion that alter the neutral rational vision of an individual .Affecting his/here judgement . The change in neutral perception is usually directly proportional to the extent of the emotion . The greater the emotion, The greater the bias. Not to say it’s the only factor but the main. Theoretically speaking the bias caused by emotional disposition can reach a point of extreme where he/she can no longer see anything but what they feel .
The origin of the statement ” Love is blind ” .
But before we get all dramatic, romantic and poetic. Is this a moral statement ? . Is it a good thing and a justified excuse to human actions? . Or a ugly consequence beautified by the makeup of classical poetry . Yes , i meant not to put a question mark there.
All emotions are similarly blinding in a certain extent. Hate is blind.. Ask convicted murderers
Greed is blind, Fear is blind , lust is blind etc… But aren’t necessarily considered as virtuous or praiseworthy phenomenon. For the simple reason that is ” As an adult moral PRINCIPLES are what supposed to dictate your actions regardless of the emotional impulses” . It’s not an excuse for a rapist to say ” oo lust is blind ” .
” Love is blind” is a statement that unintentionally or intentionally convinces people that it’s justified and poetic to loose rational vision. The rational vision which orders and forbids in accordance to the person’s moral principles . And take emotional impulses as the guide instead which dictates actions according to mere desires. You get to choose which one control your actions because complete freewill is an illusion. Something controls your actions!. Choosing what does might be the only freewill .
Reminded me of a Quranic verse
” Have you seen he who has taken his lord his [own] desire” 45:23.
Virtue is in a mother not defending her murderer child despite her love . Virtue is in a father defending his child despite his fear . Virtue is in doing what’s morally right regardless.
I can sense an opposing argument. So let me discuss it beforehand. A very arrogant language I’m using indeed. Not entirely sure why? . Maybe I had a bad day and emotions are dictating my actions too.
” Love is blind” is sometimes used in contexts where a high perceived individual gets along with a low perceived individual according to social norms.
” See it’s a moral statement!!! , Shut up!! ” .
Well .Saying shut up was inappropriate but I won’t take it personally. Let me explain the difference.
There is difference between taking emotions as the lord that dictates, orders and forbids. And overcoming inner/cognitive dissonance .
“Cognitive dissonance is the mental stress or discomfort felt when you hold two or more contradictory beliefs, values, or act in ways that conflict with your beliefs.”
An example would be believing people are equal and having uncontrolled hierarchal or racist thoughts and tendencies. Which is common among ” high status perceived individuals ” .
This hierarchal or racist feelings are also emotions that alter our vision. The exact reason why the person’s moral principal of ” All people are equal” undergoes an inner conflict with it i.e.cognitive dissonance.
When love comes into the equation it causes an attraction towards the loved one cancelling or neutralizing the repulsion caused by the racist/hierarchal bias. Which in return ends the inner conflict between the bias and the moral principal of ” All people are equal” .
In other words , love didn’t blind him/her but just cancelled out an opposite emotion leading to neutral vision again .
No virtue in being controlled by emotions against moral principles including love
Or maybe the novels and movies were right and I’m the cocky person meant to find out through a dramatic story.
