Nigeria, an icon of music and the struggle for freedom: Fela Kuti

Not only an extraordinary musician, but also a tireless activist, he used his art to fight oppression, colonialism and corruption in African governments.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti, born on October 15, 1938, in Abeokuta, was a pioneer of African music and a central figure in the fight for civil rights in Africa. His death, on August 2, 1997, in Lagos, marked the end of an era, but his cultural and political impact remains indelible. Kuti invented Afrobeat, an innovative genre that blends traditional African rhythms with funk, jazz, and soul, creating a complex and overwhelming sound that would influence generations of musicians.

Not only an extraordinary musician, but also an tireless activist, Fela used his art to fight against oppression, colonialism, and corruption in African governments. His powerful and provocative songs fearlessly attacked authoritarian regimes and exposed the hypocrisy of the ruling class. Through his music, Fela inspired millions of people to rebel against injustices and gave a voice to the powerless.

In addition to his musical career, Fela created the “Kalakuta Republic,” a symbolic place where he formed a self-managed community that celebrated African culture and freedom. His lifestyle choices, which included polygamy and an open attitude toward sexuality, were often seen as provocative and controversial, but reflected his desire to break with conventions and assert a freer, more progressive vision of society.

Fela continued his struggle for freedom even in the face of repression by the Nigerian government, which arrested and persecuted him multiple times. Despite the difficulties, he maintained his stance as a committed activist, even as his health began to deteriorate. His death, officially due to complications related to AIDS, left a deep void in African music and politics.

Today, Fela Kuti is still considered a symbol of resistance, not only for his musical contribution but also for his commitment to social justice and African cultural roots. His son, Femi, has continued to carry on his legacy by founding the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, a place where music and activism continue to inspire new generations.
