Muhammadu Buhari, former president of Nigeria, has died at the age of 82. The news was confirmed by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, who specified that the death occurred in the United Kingdom, where Buhari had been for several days receiving medical treatment. However, the specific causes of death have not been disclosed.
Buhari served as president of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, a period during which he made numerous trips to England for health reasons. In 2017 alone, he stayed there for over three months, while in 2018 he remained for four days. After his re-election in 2019, he progressively reduced his public appearances, fueling speculation about his health.
Among the many messages of condolence, we highlight this one from George Weah, former president of Liberia and former footballer:
During his mandates, Buhari was a polarizing figure: on one hand, he represented the promise of a decisive fight against corruption and terrorism; on the other, he was criticized for the inefficiency of his administration and the authoritarian handling of some internal crises. His death marks the definitive end of a political era that deeply marked Nigeria’s recent history.
