A bloody afternoon has shattered the peace around the University of Benin (UNIBEN) campus in Edo State. Two days ago, a young man was gunned down just moments after driving out of the university perimeter. According to preliminary accounts from eyewitnesses, the victim’s vehicle was pulled alongside by a commando of gunmen armed with AK-47 assault rifles. The assailants opened fire repeatedly, leaving the driver with no chance of survival. A young woman in the car sustained a gunshot wound to her hand during the shooting. She was immediately rescued and rushed to the hospital; while her condition is reported as stable, she remains in deep shock. The nature of the ambush, described as a targeted execution, has led investigators to suspect a link to “cultist” criminality. This complex and deeply rooted reality goes far beyond petty crime, representing a shadow society that local authorities have long struggled to contain in the city’s most volatile districts. These organizations, which originated within universities as social activism groups, have over time degenerated into violent fraternities involved in a wide array of criminal activities—from kidnappings for ransom and drug trafficking to armed robbery and cyberfraud—contributing to a climate of perennial insecurity. The phenomenon remains difficult to eradicate as it offers disenfranchised youth a sense of belonging, protection, and “power.” Often, the bond between members is sealed by blood oaths, making it nearly impossible to leave the group without fatal consequences.
University management intervened promptly to de-escalate tensions and provide clarity. In an official statement released on May 13, the University of Benin distanced itself from the incident, stating that, following internal verifications, those involved were not students of the institution. The administration sought to reassure parents and students: “We are deeply saddened by the violence that occurred near our campus. The safety of our community remains our absolute priority. We are collaborating closely with law enforcement and have already increased patrols to ensure the protection of everyone within the university area.” The Students’ Union Government (SUG) also issued a message via social media, urging the student body to remain calm and avoid panic while police investigations proceed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The episode has reopened the debate regarding security in the outskirts of Benin City, with particular focus on the Ugbowo axis. This area, which houses the main UNIBEN campus, is historically considered a critical zone for cultist activity—a “gray zone” where the boundaries between academic life and street dynamics become dangerously blurred. Here, amidst the busy streets surrounding the university, citizens are now loudly demanding a more consistent and structured security presence. They are calling for proactive monitoring rather than sporadic interventions following tragedies, to ensure that Ugbowo no longer remains a hostage to such acts of extreme violence.
