Free Alaa, in Rome on March 3rd for the release of Alaa Abd el-Fattah

Appointment for the sit-in with Amnesty in front of the British Embassy

On Monday 3 March in Rome, in front of the UK Embassy, starting at 17:30, Amnesty International Italy will hold a demonstration to demand the immediate release of the prisoner of conscience Alaa Abd el-Fattah, detained in Egypt but also with British citizenship.

Alaa Abd el-Fattah, Egypt’s most famous human rights defender, was unjustly sentenced to five years in prison for “spreading false news” at the end of 2021 following a grossly unfair trial. He should have been released last September if the two years he spent in prison awaiting trial since September 2019 had been subtracted from his sentence.

The situation is further aggravated by the hospitalization of Alaa Abd el-Fattah’s mother, who after about 150 days of hunger strike is in danger of life in a London hospital. British Prime Minister Starmer only showed attention to Alaa Abd el-Fattah’s case on February 14 and, once again urged by human rights groups, parliamentarians and representatives of culture and entertainment, on February 26 he reiterated that he is following the case and promised to intervene.

In the face of the prolonged injustice towards Alaa Abd el-Fattah and his mother’s health conditions, every day of delay could have dramatic consequences.
