Massacre in Nigeria: ISIS Claims Responsibility for Adamawa Slaughter During Football Match

Coordinated attack in the Northeast: 29 dead and villages razed. As residents flee, suspicions of local informants emerge behind the carnage.

What was meant to be a Sunday of sport and community transformed into a bloodbath, leaving at least 29 people dead. ISIS has officially claimed responsibility for a coordinated attack against the communities of Guyaku and Telabala in the Gombi district of Adamawa State, northeastern Nigeria. The assault took place last Sunday, April 26, around 5:00 PM. According to eyewitness accounts, the terrorists strategically chose a moment when the community was most distracted: a friendly football match between the youth of Zangula and a neighboring village, held at a local primary school field. While dozens of families and young people were gathered to watch the game, a commando of armed men stormed the area. The assailants opened fire indiscriminately into the crowd, sowing terror before setting fire to homes, motorcycles, and a church.

Jihadist Influence and Government Response

Through its official channels on Telegram, ISIS confirmed it was the mastermind behind the operation. This claim underscores the growing alarm over the group’s expanding influence in Africa—specifically in Adamawa, a region already ravaged by Boko Haram and its offshoot, ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province). The Governor of Adamawa State, Umaru Fintiri, cancelled his official engagements to visit the site of the massacre immediately, promising to bolster security through tighter collaboration between the government and military forces. However, the traditional ruler of Gombi, Aggrey Bechour-Ali, cast a disturbing light on the event, suggesting that local informants may have assisted the terrorists in planning the attack to coincide with the match, exploiting the population’s moment of maximum vulnerability.

A Desolate Aftermath

The streets of Guyaku and Telabala now present a harrowing scene. Images from the affected areas show gutted churches, charred remains of motorcycles, and weeping families abandoning their homes. Despite government reassurances, many survivors are fleeing with what few belongings they have left, driven by the fear of a follow-up attack. This exodus worsens the already critical internal displacement crisis in the region, where thousands live in constant dread of new incursions.

This massacre once again exposes the fragility of security in rural Nigeria and the ruthless ability of jihadist groups to strike civilian targets during the most unsuspecting moments of daily life.
