DR Congo, the agony of a country is being consumed in the deafening silence of indifference

An explosive situation in the Kivu region . The appeal of health workers and aid workers: "do not leave us alone".

The situation in North Kivu, the strategic region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has reached a critical point after the murder of governor Peter Cirimwami. Yet the world continues to ignore the conflict or rather the conflicts, which for years have bloodied the country and extinguished the hopes that sooner or later the horror of war may end.

As Claudio Scatola recalls, (he has been working in Congo for decades with “Operatori sanità nel mondo”), the situation is degenerating. He and other aid workers in the country, as human rights activists, made a heartfelt appeal for an immediate international response, because the ongoing humanitarian crisis is at a point of no return and requires immediate action. For some time, the population of Kivu has lived in a context of violence and suffering. It is estimated that there are over 15 million victims, and the refugee camps are overcrowded, lacking essential services. Humanitarian organizations and volunteers, who operate in extremely difficult conditions, need protection in order to continue their work. Without adequate intervention, the suffering of the local population will further increase.
The murder of Governor Cirimwami has shaken the already fragile stability of the region. There are fragmented and inconclusive news but it is clear that uncertainty and fear should not divert attention from a fundamental truth: it is imperative to save human lives. The crisis , defined by Scatola as a «silent genocide>which must come to an end, cannot remain in the shadows».
The voices from the international community must rise in a unanimous chorus to guarantee adequate and timely assistance. Every day lost is a new suffering and broken lives. It is urgent to join forces, from public institutions to individuals who wish to contribute, so that concrete and significant interventions are implemented. Only in this way it will be possible to put an end to this crisis and restore hope to a population that has already borne an unbearable burden> Scatola’s request on behalf of the many humanitarian workers.
Among the areas most at risk, Bukavu is undoubtedly the most exposed. Many international aid workers are preparing to return for security reasons, an even more alarming sign of the precariousness of the situation
«Nurses and rescue workers must not be left alone, but supported and protected so that they can continue to assist those who need it most. It is essential that the world makes its voice heard, that the gravity of the situation in North Kivu is not underestimated and that we work together for a better future in Congo. Human dignity and right to life», is the final Scatola’s appeal to keep attention high on Congo. Before will be too late.
